2019 Australian Open Championships
With the change in format by Swimming Australia to Open and Age Championships saw our 17-18 year old girls and 18 year old boys join the open crew for Nationals. Unfortunately this format did change a couple of swimmers minds about attending. It was interesting to see how the finals were sorted and whether the Age swimmers nominated to swim in Age finals only or Open finals knowing that Open finals were not starting until 8.00pm. The Age finals started at 5.30pm. Our "Age" swimmers certainly missed the big atmosphere of the traditional Age Championships. However it was great for those 19/20 year olds to have finals in their own age groups.
There were a number of highlights of the meet!
Bella Symons winning her first individual NATIONAL MEDAL after 8 years swimming at a national level plus making finals in 100 fly, 50 back and 50 fly.
Ryland Brian who pulled 6sec off his 400IM PB today earning him his first individual National Medal and a GOLD one at that!! 6th 18/19 men’s 800m free - 14.73 sec PB.
Ewan Bennett swimming another PB off his morning PB in the 100m BR - 1:01.9, a time which is under the Swimming Victoria USA touring squad time.
Isabella Smorgon swam a 2 sec PB to make her first National Finals, then shaved another 1 sec off in her finals swim
Sammy Schlicht in the 200Bk swimming 3 sec faster tonight than in the heats (only 1.3 secs off her personal best without being back in full training yet due to injuries), plus an actual pb in her 50 back.
Monique Beckwith finishing 6th in 50 backstroke.
Congratulations to all of our senior swimmers on a successful meet.
Enjoy your break!
